How is high purity quartz sand made?

High purity quartz sand is a kind of quartz sand with SiO 2 content higher than 99.9%, which is white powder with no discoloration and low impurity content. High purity quartz sand has high temperature resistance, excellent chemical properties, excellent electrical insulation and transparency, etc. It is an irreplaceable mineral raw material for high-tech industry.

High-purity quartz sand is purified from ordinary quartz sand. Its impurity content is very low, its performance is stable, the demand of industry is large, and it can make full use of resources. Therefore, it is very important to develop the preparation technology of high-purity quartz sand.

Purification of quartz sand is mainly to remove a small amount or trace impurities and obtain high purity quartz sand. The commonly used processes are scrubbing, gravity separation, magnetic separation, flotation, acid leaching and so on.

  1. Washing

The impurity iron, bond and mineral slime on the surface of quartz sand are removed by mechanical force and peeling force between sand grains. Scrubbing can effectively remove some impurities from quartz sand minerals in the early stage and clean the surface of quartz sand particles, so that the subsequent purification work can be carried out smoothly.

  1. Gravity separation

Gravity separation is the screening of minerals according to their gravity. Due to the different density of mineral particles in the medium affected by fluid force and mechanical force, loose layers are formed, thus ore particles are separated.

  1. Magnetic separation

Magnetic separation is the separation of magnetic impurity minerals and particles from quartz sand. Quartz in quartz sand is a diamagnetic material, which can not be magnetized in the magnetic field. Most of the impurities containing Fe and Ti are paramagnetic materials, which can be magnetized. Thus, the impurities containing Fe and Ti can be removed by magnetic separator, and a high content of quartz sand can be obtained.

Wet high intensity magnetic separator and high gradient magnetic separator are commonly used in magnetic separation.

  1. Flotation separation

Flotation is a process of separating mineral particles by different physical and chemical properties on the surface of mineral particles. Its main function is to remove related mineral mica and feldspar from quartz sand. It was found that the pH value of the pulp, the type and amount of collector had a significant effect on the flotation purification effect.

  1. Acid leaching

Quartz is insoluble in acid (except hydrofluoric acid). By dissolving iron and other harmful elements with acid, impurities are separated and high purity quartz sand is obtained. Impurities in the surface and crevices of quartz sand can be removed by acid leaching to the maximum extent. Physical methods such as magnetic separation and flotation can only remove mineral structural impurities.

It was found that the effect of using mixed acid to remove impurities during acid leaching was better, quartz would be dissolved by hydrofluoric acid, so the concentration of hydrofluoric acid in mixed acid should not be too high. Time, acid concentration, washing process and temperature are all factors affecting the acid leaching effect.
